Creating community within the Middle School Scholar Program provides a safe place of encouragement and stability for our students. We are able to have fun and participate in activities like Super Skate, swimming and Camp Wapsie, but we’re also able to foster the relationships not only between staff and students, but also between students across our schools and within our program.
These trips create a space where we are able to have real conversations about life, chat about the drama that comes with being in middle school and problem solve positive solutions. Many of these conversations wouldn’t happen if we didn’t create a safe, consistent place to hang out and have down time for our students to casually talk with us. Once our students trust us, that’s when the learning happens. Once the relationships are established and the community has been built around expectations of success, our students grow in leaps and bounds emotionally, behaviorally and academically.
