Last Saturday, Kids on Course participated in the 4K Turkey Trot alongside fifteen AMAZING students from Harrison Elementary, as well as a few parents! Each student, staff member, and parent finished the race at their own pace, partnering each adult with one or more student. Mr. Tyler and Ms. Hannah led the groups willing to run the whole race, while I (thankfully…) led a group of one to two students who preferred to alternate between walking and jogging. Our times ranged from 33 to 45 minutes, but the most important thing is that WE ALL FINISHED!
Now it’s time for the moment of truth. When I was first asked to participate in the Turkey Trot, I was more than a little skeptical. Running for the sole purpose of running has never exactly been my favorite, but I showed up to the race anyways. I’m glad I did – not just because it was fun or a new experience, but because it was a good reminder that these kids are teaching me just as much as I am teaching them. If it wasn’t for the kids at Harrison Elementary I would never have participated in the race. Every day with Kids on Course is a learning experience thanks to the amazing students that I and the rest of the KOC team work with. So here’s to the students! Thanks for being motivators and teachers as well!
